Shelley Luther, a Republican elected in 2025 to represent Texas House District 62, recently used her social media platform to address property tax policy and legislative accountability. In a series of posts on August 25 and 26, Luther commented on tax relief measures, House rules, and efforts to maintain quorum during legislative sessions.
On August 25, Luther emphasized the need for broad property tax relief across Texas, writing: “ALL Texans (not some) deserve property tax relief until we’re able to completely eliminate property taxes. Texans should NOT rent their house from the government. Thank you @brentmoney for this amendment.” The statement reflects ongoing debates within the state regarding the future of property taxation and proposals to reduce or eliminate these taxes.
Later that day, Luther reported her support for motions aimed at strengthening House rules and holding Democratic legislators accountable for breaking quorum. She stated: “Today, I voted yes on all of the motions to strengthen House rules, and to censure and punish Democrats who fled from their elected duty to break quorum. Unfortunately, there were 27 Republicans who decided not to punish them, and the punishment motion failed. #noaccountability”
On August 26, Luther referenced near-success in achieving a quorum with several colleagues by posting: “Almost a quorum! @realmitchlittle @reptinderholt @brentmoney @NateSchatzline @KatrinaPierson @CarolineForTX @CarrieIsaac @wesvirdelltx @KeresaForTexas @olcott4texas @AndyHopperTX @LaHood4Texas @RepSchofield”
Luther was elected in 2025 after replacing Reggie Smith as representative for Texas’s 62nd House district.
