Grayson County’s budget has been chopped by more than $1 million due to the effects of COVID-19.
According to the Herald Democrat, every department experienced cuts as the city aims to save money during the nationwide pandemic. And it’s become a race among commissioners. Grayson County Judge Bill Magers confirmed that County Commissioner David Whitlock went as far as asking which commissioner made the biggest reduction.
Jeff Whitmire from Precinct 1 might have claimed that title as he took $32,000 from his budget, though Whitlock in turn cut $32,001. Commissioner Bart Lawrence of Precinct 4 implied, tongue in cheek, that he didn’t have to cut as much because he’s more responsible with funds.
The area has seen major setbacks but hasn’t had to reduce any worker’s salary, lay them off or even terminate anyone. On the other hand, the cuts make room for potential future positions that could help boost the economy further.
