CITY OF DENISON: COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Information & City Announcements

Announcement

City of Denison issued the following announcement on March 16

The City of Denison is monitoring the potential impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Below is key information on COVID-19 as well as some measures that can be taken to decrease and prevent the spread of this virus based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance.

Please visit the CDC's website for more information or visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website.

Announcements

The City of Denison encourages employees and the public to adhere to virus mitigation guidelines from the CDC to reduce their risk of exposure to COVID-19. These guidelines include hand washing, avoiding public places while sick, and social distancing.

“It is out of an abundance of caution that your City has postponed social and recreational events and programs,” City Manager Judson Rex said. “Residents can continue to rely on continuity of city services including police, fire, water, wastewater and trash pickup. Citizens are encouraged to call, use online payment features and practice social distancing.”

Distancing helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 via human transmission by limiting the opportunities for people to be in close contact. Because COVID-19 is most commonly spread through the air by coughing or sneezing, close personal contact by touch, or touching an object or surface with the virus on it, minimizing contact with other individuals and frequent handwashing are important steps in reducing the risk of disease transmission.

What is COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • Touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands; and rarely, fecal contamination.
CDC Tips

Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask:

  • Facemasks are not recommended for those who are well to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others or by health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
