CITY OF GAINESVILLE: Reports First COVID-19 Death

Funeral

City of Gainesville issued the following announcement on July 1.

The City of Gainesville is saddened to report the first death in the city linked to COVID-19 occurred on June 30, 2020. The victim, a male resident in his 30’s who had underlying health issues, tested positive days prior. His condition declined rapidly and he was transported by Cooke County EMS to North Texas Medical Center by ambulance on June 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the patient succumbed to his illness shortly upon arrival to NTMC. Out of respect for the family and due to HIPAA requirements, no further details will be released.

The novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold.

Currently there is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. It is mainly spread from person-to-person that are within about six feet through respiratory droplets.

The City of Gainesville recommends that everyone follow all CDC guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 including:

Frequently wash hands

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Cover coughs and sneezes

Practice social distancing (6 ft. apart)

Stay home when you feel sick

Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others

Monitor your health; Be alert for symptoms
