Sherman High School issued the following announcement on Oct. 31.
Last school year, Sherman ISD announced a plan to expand its Pre-K and Head Start program to Perrin Learning Center. The expansion will allow Sherman ISD to serve Pre-K students in a full-day program with two dedicated early childhood campuses. Jefferson Elementary Principal, Nancy Jung, has been appointed to lead the district's new full-day pre-k program at Perrin at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
As part of the district's new rezoning plan, Jefferson Elementary will close at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Students who attend Jefferson will be zoned to Dillingham, which will be a K-5 campus at the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Teachers at Jefferson Elementary will also transition to different campuses throughout the district, and Nancy Jung will be the principal of the new Perrin Early Childhood Center.
"I am honored and thrilled for the opportunity to lead the opening of our new Perrin Early Childhood Center. It is exciting to consider all the new adventures in coming together to support our youngest learners and their families in their educational journey," Jung expressed while explaining her excitement to transition to early childhood education.
"I was previously blessed with the experience of being renovation lead for an elementary campus to expand the early childhood classrooms into its separate learning community. I remember fondly the eagerness of staff coming together from various campuses to partner in the same building and share in the love of early childhood learning. As their administrator, I loved being in classrooms and sharing in parent meetings to plan for success," she said.
While Jung is excited to start preparing for the district's second early childhood campus, closing the doors of one of the most historic campuses in Sherman ISD will be difficult for the campus principal.
"It is certainly bittersweet to plan for the successful completion of the mission of Jefferson Elementary School this school year," Jung admitted. "Our campus has been an important part of the educational legacy of Sherman, with a significant number of community members and leaders either attending Jefferson as a student, student-teacher, or staff member. Its proximity and relationship with Austin College have led to years of interns and student-teacher educational partnerships. Numerous families have had multiple generations attend Jefferson. As we plan to transition, we must also plan to celebrate the legacy of Jefferson Elementary."
Jung and the Jefferson staff will host a public event to honor the legacy of Jefferson Elementary during the spring semester before the campus closes. In the meantime, the school plans to continue providing the highest level of education to Jefferson students until the last day of school.
"We will not stop making important learning memories this year, as we prepare for our year-end celebration of 125 years. Our faculty is committed to ending our school year with high academic achievements in a manner that would make all former Jefferson faculty proud," Jung said. "I will miss the camaraderie of Jefferson staff and students, and their daily work together as a family. I plan to bring the same Jefferson family environment with me to Perrin so our students and staff can work daily in a caring, supportive setting."
Jung has a 30-year educational background focused on foundational learning, with certifications in Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten, Elementary, and Special Education, in addition to her M.Ed in School Administration. Her years of teaching and administrative experience spans from serving in the role of principal, assistant principal, intervention specialist, special education teacher, as well as experience in traditional, multi-age, and bilingual classrooms.
